POWER TO ARREST
PATROLWOMEN NOT TO BE APPOINTED GOOD WORK BY MATRONS (From Our Resident Correspondent.') WELLINGTON, To-day. It is improbable that patrolwomen, with full powers to arrest, will be appointed to the New Zealand Police force, as asked by the National Council of Women. Police matrons already do good work and perform many functions which in other countries are undertaken by social organisations themselves. The official view is that no good purpose would be served by extending the* work which these women members of the police force already perform. In addition, they could not take the oath as it stands at present, for women would not be able to “preserve the peace” in the manner demanded of men. Finally, the question of pay is a big one and would possibly cause trouble within the force itself. Further legislation is needed before the police force can be extended in the manner suggested.
