OTAHUHU FURNISHES WINNER OF BIG NORTH ISLAND SPRINT CLASSIC

I RUNNING better than “evens,” F. B. Toms, the Otahuhu runner, flashed past the winning post at Taihape this week, convincing winner of one of the biggest cash handicaps in New Zealand to-day. His win did not come as a surprise, as he has been running at the top of his form lately after having had a season's racing in Australia, from which he is not long returned. At Taihape three years ago, Toms romped off with the “treble,” 100yds, 120yds and 220yds, so that he is no stranger to the Taihape folk. In winning the big race this week, he returned 11 1-Bsec off seven yards. The meeting between Toms, Hudson and Watson, if all accept, at the big athletic carnival at the Domain next week should provide a battle royal, as all three are in the first flight of New Zealand’s sprinters.
