PREPARING FOR POPPY DAY
“EVERY HALFPENNY NEEDED’ “You ladies will have to work harder than ever this year. We need every halfpenny we can get,” said Mrs. A. D. Campbell, who presided over a meeting of collectors called this morning to organise the Poppy Day campaign. The secretary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr. E. H. Sharp< outlined the various ways in which the funds collected last year had been expended. It was a notable feature that there was no charge for the administration either of the Poppy Day £I,OOO or the Canteen Fund £I,OO as all expenditure had been directed through the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Last year 35.362 small poppies were sold and 224 of the large variety, this number being a record for some years. The net sum collected was £1,337. Stations were allotted to the collectors, and Friday, April 20, was tentatively decided on as the date of the appeal. It was suggested that the collection be carried on into the evening, and this was left to the discretion of the individual collectors.
