MINISTERS TOUR FRANKLIN NEEDS OF THE COUNTY (From Our Own Correspondent.) HUKEKOHE, Wednesday. ‘This country cannot be developed unless good roads are provided for the carting of fertilisers and cream.” Thus a spokesman at Otaua emphasised the needs of the Franklin county to the Ministers of Lands and Public Works during their tour to-day. Many deputations asked for road improvement to allow efficient transport services, which were necessary to the development of the dairy industry. The Ministers, the- Hon. A. D. McLeod and the Hon. K. S. Williams, travelled from Waiuku to New Brighton and back to Pukekohe. After inspecting the High School at Pukekohe the party was shown the dangers of a railway crossing at Buckland, where an overhead bridge was wanted. At Tuakau, State aid was sought for the liquidation of a £9OO debt on a domain. A request was also made for the erection of a hostel for Maoris. The improvement of the Waitaka-ruru-Miranda Road, to enable cream to be sent to Ngatea, instead of to Tuakau, was asked by New Brighton farmers. Maoris objected to the collection of mussels on the gulf beaches by Europeans, who were said to be robbing the natives of their means of subsistence. The Ministers will begin a three days’ tour of Raglan to-day.
