Commendation for Awapuni

CHANGE OF QUARTERS MAY GO TO SYDNEY THIS YEAR (Special to THE SUN) PALMERSTON N., Monday. For some little time past it has been the desire of Mr. W. H. Gaisford, of Oringi, to set up a racing establishment in Palmerston North and to further that end purchased a property on which he intended to erect a modern racing establishment. He was, however, frustrated in his intention by reason of residents at the western end of the town objecting to the City Fathers of the introduction of an establishment of such a nature within a residential area. The difficulty has, however, been overcome in some measure by Mr. Gaisford leasing the stables which were at one time occupied by T. George, - now of Auckland, and more recently by J. Coyle. The house on his

own property will be occupied by his private trainer, George Jones, and there will be available at the residence an area of ground for grazing purposes. Jones came through from Greenmeadows on Wednesday with Chelone. Atareria and Disrank, the last-named being a two-year-old by Lord Quex from Morganatic, who has yet to race. Chelone has been suffering from a mysterious ailment, which ate its way into the tail, even into the flesh itself, and the gelding presents a pathetic appearance with a mere stump for a tail. The disease, has. fortunately, been eradicated and the affected parts are now quite healthy, but it will no doubt be some little time before he can be trained seriously. Several other members of that owner’s string will be brought through to Awapuni in the course of the next few weeks, while Commendation, who has been running out on Mr. Gaisford’s property, will probably re-enter the active brigade next month, and it would not be surprising to find the Limond gelding making the crossing of the Tasman before the year closes. Incidentally, Mr. Gaisford leaves on a holiday trip to Sydney in about a fortnight’s time and will be at Randwick for the autumn meeting. RACING FIXTURES
