WITH THE BOY SCOUTS
Black Wolf, our scribe in the Avondale Troop, writes: “The Avondale Boy Scouts, who began work again about six weeks ago, have been attending parades regularly every Friday night, and six new boys have been enrolled. The following badges hav« been awarded: Two cyclists’, two gardeners’, one carpenter’s, three swimmers’, and two pioneers’. “Assistant Scoutmaster Keith Taylor and Troop Leader J. Marshall have been instructing the boys in Morse signalling, while an interesting talk on artillery was given by the latter last Friday. “A combined church parade of the New Lynn Girl Guides and the Avondale troop of Scouts was held two weeks ago. The troop has had considerable luck lately as regards cricket matches, always coming off on the good side. During this year all thd\boys intend to gain as many firstclass badges as possible. “Gymnasium rings have been erected in the parade hall, and these are proving very popular. “About five boys, under Patrol Leader W. Pringle, held a week-end camp at Blockhouse Bay, and on Saturday, Scoutmaster B. McFarland, Assistant Scoutmaster J. Gordon, and four patrol leaders, intend cycling to Piha.” * * * Strongbow, who lias been appointed Wigwam scribe for the Bevonport Troop, sends the following report:—^ “Last week-end the Bevonport Boy Scouts held a camp. Dr. Pope, rhe secretary of the committee, was in charge. Four boys made up the party —Patrol Leader Rosenfeldt, B. Bennett (scribe), and Scouts S. Catchpole and B. Pope. “Our first duty was to level off the ground in front of the shack to make room for extending the building, which at present is not large enough to meet the requirements of the boys. On Sunday Scoutmaster Jones, Troop Leader Evans, and a friend visited the camp, and assisted with the work. The shack has now been newly painted. “On Monday, t March 12, we held a leaders’ meeting, during which Scout N. Evans passed the test for the musicians’ badge, and Scout Gilberd the signalling and compass examination for second-class work. Scout Compton also passed his compass test. We have now three musicians in the troop.” * * * Big Wolf, scribe of the Edendale Troop, supplies the following news: “The Edendale Troop has been showing great keenness in the matter of proficiency badges, for since re-
suming work on February 3 Leaders R. Brebner, D. Fletcher, and A. Grayson have passed the test for the ambulance badge. While at camp with the Mount Albert Troop, Scout Hicks passed the tests for the cook’s and swimmer’s badges. “On the second Friday night after resuming work, our new chaplain, the Rev. Gilmour, 8.A., inspected us, and gave us a short address on scouting, for which three hearty cheers were given. “The cricket match played between the Edendale and Shackleton Troops at Nicholson Park resulted in a win for Edendale, the total for two innings being Shackleton 57, and Edendale 71. “The annual meeting of this troop is to be held at the end of this month. •At present the date is not definitely fixed, but the meeting will probably take place on Thursday, March 29.”
