UNIFORM SYSTEM OF RELIEF WANTED
UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM With a view to obtaining some uniform system of unemployment relief between hospital boards, a conference of boards has been called at Wellington on April 3. Explaining the object of the conference, Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, at yesterday’s meeting, stated that if, as was reported, there were a thousand men out of work in Auckland it was a very serious thing. A big scheme was wanted and one which would place a large number of men in work during the winter. “The present system of giivng relief is only sapping the morale of the men,” he added. It was resolved that the chairman and Mr. Savage represent the board at the conference. The secretary was authorised to aftend a conference of hospital board secretaries to be held at the same time.
