CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

WAITEMATA MEETING A report that the Highways Board was recommending a subsidy on the maintenance of the East Coast roads and that the Prime Minister had promised to see if a £ for £ subsidy would be available for the metalling of the road between Deep Creek and

Silverdale was made at the meeting of the Waitemata Chamber of Commerce by the president, Mr. T. Walsh, last evening. Considerable satisfaction was expressed, as the chamber had agitated for this since 1922. The Hon. W. Nosworthy forwarded a copy of a Bill drafted by Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., for relief of unemployment, suggesting the setting up of a board. Mr. Kennings said that the levy on industry for support of workless people was getting enormou*; the man that was thrifty was forced to maintain those who were thriftless and unfortunate. It wa% resolved that a special meeting be arranged to discuss the question of unemployment insurance. On the question of water supplies for the North Shore, there was unanimity that th© Waitakere proposal should be opposed.
