PROMINENT IN BUSINESS

ATE. A. J. ENTRICAN, who occupies the dual position of chairman and managing director of the firm of A. J. Entrican and Coy., Ltd., must count that as only part of his many worthwhile activities.

Born and educated in County Tyrone, Ireland, Mr. Entrican started out in business with the firm of Rosborougli and Coy., of Londonderry. He arrived in Auckland early in the year 1880, and after a few months as assistant manager for Chas. Major's retail establishment, took over the business in partnership with Mr. Samuel Taylor. The partnership was dissolved about 1885, and Mr. Entrican started out in business as a commission agent representing several well-established firms. The growth of the business necessitated a trip to the Old Country in 1802, and on his return Mr. Entrican was joined by his brother and the business continued under the name of A. J. Entrican and Coy. Since then it has advanced with the development of the Dominion until to-day it has business connections with all parts of the Dominion and several overseas countries. Apart from his bicsincss activities Mr. Entrican has takqn a prominent part in the civic and commercial life of the city. He was elected to the Auckland Harbour Board in 1807 and occupied a scat an that body for several terms, being chairman in 1010-11. He has also been a prominent member of the City Council ovqp the period and, as icell as holding the position of DeputyMayor at the present time, occupied that position for six years of Sir James Gunson's regime. Besides being a member of .the Auckland Drainage Board, the Auckland Fire Board and the Auckland Patriotic Society, Mr. Entrican is an active supporter of the Chamber of ComTjnerce and Merchants' Association. For a number of years he held the position of chairman of this body. Mr. Entrican's services are also in request as a trustee of the Guardian Insurance Coy., trustee .of the Auckland Savings Bank, and as sinking fund commissioner of the Draiage Board. He wields increased influence as a member of St. James's Presbyterian Church, where he has been superintendent of the Sunday School for the last 39 years.
