NEW SWIMMING RECORD
MISS STOCKLEY’S SUCCESS GRAMMAR CLUB’S BIG NIGHT MISS P. ROBERTSON ONCE MORE The smashing of the 100 metres’ backstroke record by 3s was witnessed by a large crowd at the Tepid Baths last evening, when the Grammar Swimming Club held its carnival. Miss Ena Stockley, the Olympic Games representative, paced by her brother, L. Stockley, covered the distance in 85s, three seconds better than her previous saltwater record and 1 2-5 s better than her fresh - water record. This is 1 4-5 s slower than the Olympic record held by Miss S. Bauer, while the world’s record is 82 2-ss. The excellence of the swim can therefore be judged from these times. Miss Gladys Pidgeon made an unsuccessful attempt to lower her 220yds. breaststroke record of 3.35 3-ss. She was paced by IST. K. Sylow. Miss Pidgeon tired over the latter stages, having made good progress at the start. Her final time was 3.39, or 3 2-5 s under her previous time. For the seventh time in succession, Miss Peggy Robertson, the brilliant sprint swimmer, won her race. With some of Auckland’s best women. Miss Robertson raced like a champion. Her win was decidedly popular. The inter-schools’ relay attracted two teams and provided a most exciting contest. The 440yds. inter-club was the race of the night. A. E. Baird from scratch was seen at his best, and he made de Loree go all out to get the verdict. The dual relay proved a popular event. In a rattling good finish Parnell won by four yards from Waitemata, with Grammar in third place. A novelty in the shape of a pacing machine,, invented by Mr. R. Kitchinman, proved most interesting. The remainder of the events were keenly contested and provided a splendid sport. Results: —» 440Yds. Open Handicap.—R. de Loree (Mount Eden), ss, 1; A. E. Baird (Waitemata), scr, 2; B.
