RIO GRANDE DO SUL. —Rio Grande do Sul, one of the largest towns of the province of the same name, is the most important port of Southern Brazil, serving a population of 2,275,000 and an area which produces more wheat, rice, grapes and coal, and has more sheep and cattle than any other Brazilian State. It is the only port in a coast-line of 522 miles, bordered throughout by coastal lagoofts and sand bars. The provincial capital is Porto Alegre, which is situated on the Guahyba River, about ten miles from the northern extremity of the Lagoa des Patos and nearly 200 miles from the sea. These cirl cumstances result in its having to give | pride of place as a port to Rio Grande do ! Sul. which is situated on the Atlantic seaboard, just south of the mouth of the Lagoa, and which serves both the capi- ! tal and Pelotas, the second largest city, 25 miles away. Rio Grande possesses ex- ] cellent harbour facilities, one section of i which is devoted to the use of small coastj wise and river craft, and the other handles ! ocean-going traffic and the larger coasting steamers. The depth of water allows the entrance and berthing of vessels drawing up to 32ft. of water, and the quays, which have lately been modernised, have a total length of nearly 5,000 feet. At the extreme end the waterfront Is the maritime railway terminus, from whiqh over 1,000 miles of track connect the port, not only with all parts of the province, but also with Uruguay and Rio de Janeiro.
