VICTIM OF FATE
LASCAR ARRESTED FOR OWN SAFETY NOT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT Prcsj Association. GISBORNE, To-day. Abdoolnabee Sultan Kan. who because of the threats of his Lascar shipmates in the Argyllshire, was brought ashore at Gisborne on March 10 for his own protection, was again before the Court this morning on a charge of assaulting Teherilla Annus Mahmad. The police intimated that they would offer no evidence, and the charge was withdrawn. Abdoolnabee was then charged with landing in New Zealand without a permit, being an alien. Counsel explained that the man had been brought ashore for his own safety, and the other charge could not be proceeded with, as Abdoonabee had been guilty of no offence. He was not entitled to be released, and the only thing was to keep him at Gisborne till the departure of a steamer lor Sydney from there. He could be sent to Rangoon. Although he had done no wrong he would have to be kept in custody. Accused was remanded for a month on the understanding that the charge would be withdrawn when a boat was available to take him away from New Zealand.
