The hearing has been commenced of a case in which the Merchant Service Guild of Australasia claims increased pay and better conditions for its members on deep-sea, bay, harbour and river craft. The claims for masters range from £45 7s lOd a month for passenger vessels of 125 tons and less, to £134 17s 6d a month for passenger vessels of more than 10,000 tons. The guild also claims increased salaries for all its members from the sixth officers and fifth engineers to captains and chief engineers. It also asks for an eight-hours’ day and provision for overtime pay.—A. and N.Z.
