MT. ALBERT COUNCIL

“A SECRETIVE BODY” MR. O’CALLAGHAN’S CHARGES JOINING TO FIND OUT • “If you want to find out wha£ the Mount Albert Borough Council is doing you have to be a member of it.” This assertion was made by Mr. M. R. O’Callaghan, the official candidate of the Mount Albert Ratepayers’ Association for the vacancy on the Mount Albert Borough Council, at a meeting of ratepayers and electors of Ward D last evening. Mr. W. D. Fulton presided over an attenadnce of 30. After hearing his .address a vote of confidence in the candidate was carried unanimously. “Money has ben spent wrongly and extravagantly,” said Mr. O’Callaghan, “but I do not intend to touch upon these matters until I am in a position to get at the facts.” In the event of his becoming a member of the council he would insist that all business possible be transacted in open council. Referirn£ to the recent dismissal of the borough engineer, Mr. O’Callaghan said that the engineer had been very badly treated and it was largely on that issue he was contesting the election. In answer to questions the candidate expressed himself against any restrictions of the water supply by the use of meters, and said he would support a proposal to set up a water board.
