PAEROA PUBLIC WORKS MEN BEING DISCHARGED j For some time past the Public Works Department has been paying off its large staff of workers in its various works. A few months ago, several thousand pounds a month was paid out in wages to the workmen, and most of the money was spent in Paeroa. Not one half this sum is now paid out, and it is very difficult indeed to obtain work under the Public Works Department The discharged men are now compelled to accept relief work away from their homes. It is believed that in a few months public works in this district will cease to exist. The head office will remain in Paeroa for some time, but very little labour will be absorbed in any direction. NEWS FROM RUSSELL GIRL GUIDES MOVEMENT The Girl Guides’ movement is making good progress in the Bay of Islands. Commissioners Wright and Croll visited Kawakawa on Saturday, with the object of forming an executive for the local branch of the association. A successful meeting was held, when the following committee was elected: President, Mrs. Piggott; secretary and treasurer. Airs. Alackenzie. Representatives were appointed for the following places: Kawakawa. Mesdames Blundell and Bridges; Russell, Alesdames H. King, H. Hewitt and J. B. Williams; Kaikohe, Miss Cauldwell. Aliss L. Hall, who is captain of the Kawakawa Company, and Aliss G. Holt, captain of the Russell Company, were also present at the meeting. An enthusiast has offered to donate a cup, to be competed for among the members of the Russell Company. WHANGAREI AFFAIRS MEETING OF COUNCIL The Women’s Civic League at Whangarei is urging the appointment of a district nurse. In a letter to the borough council last evening, they asked the council’s support. No action was taken rending more detailed information. The council resolved to make a donation to the local Boy Scouts, to enable the formation of a life-saving squad, and the provisions of equipment with saving apparatus at he council’s swimming pool in Mair Park. The council refused two applications for the use of the Town Hall on Good Friday, one being for a concert by the Ponsonby Boys’ Band. The local Chamber of Commerce urged the council to have the streets indicated by name plates. It was agreed to do so early in the new financial year. The Town Hall was leased for pictures on three days weekly. HAURAKI PLAINS DRAINAGE SETTLERS' PETITIONS The suggestion to drain the Tauhei Swamp near Morrinsville to the Piako River instead of to the Waikato, as formerly, is to be inquired into by the Hauraki United Drainage Board.. The Lands Drainage Department advised the board that the balances of Government subsidies and grants still available were:—Old Hauraki Board’s £1,275 subsidy, £682 10s; old Horahia Board’s free grant of £2,000, £366 12s available and authorised for fluming outlets; old Horahia Board’s £3,000 subsidy, £516 4s lid; Te Kauri outlet, £243. The board’s foreman, Mr. E. Flavell, tendered his resignation and it_ was accepted with regret. Petitions from 90 settlers dealing with five different subjects, were received. Thirty centrol southern area settlers petitioned for the construction of an outlet known throughout the period of a long controversy as “Bagnail’s”. This received some support, and notice of motion was given by Mr. J. M. Thompson to rescind a previous resolution to the effect that no work be carried out in the area until the present scheme had been tried out. Notice of motion to rescind a previous decision to improve the GreenwayLoader drain having been given by Mr. J. Al. Thompson, five settlers petitioned against- the stoppage of the work. However, the resolution was. rescinded and a committee was set u pto devise another method of improving the drain. Twenty-one Horahia. settlers petitioned for the continuation of the Jubilee outlet to connect with the Sloane outlet. It was decided to inspect the Jubilee floodgate before considering the request. The petition of 23 Horahia district settlers protesting against the transferring of loan money to another subdivision was deferred until next meeting as the board’s requirements in regard to notice of motion had not been complied with. MANUREWA ITEMS That a communication be forwarded to the Inspector of Police, stressing the absurdity of a* prosecution in a recent case before the Otahuhu Police Court, where a ratepayer was convicted for lighting a fire in the town board district without the board’s permission, was the decision reached at the meeting of the Manurewa Town Board last evening. Air. A. C. A. Sexton presided. On the recommendation of the engineer it was decided t.o offer the Huntly Town Board £45 for the road roller. Air. Freelander advised the board of his willingness to provide the necessary land at Coxhead’s Road for the formation of the deviation. As the result of the late switching on of the electric lights throughout the district, the clerk was instructed to ask the Auckland Power Board to adjust the clock regulating the supply. A deputation from the Association Football Club waited on the board asking for increased accommodation at Jellicoe Park. They promised to make a donation toward the work. The chairman promised the board’s favourable consideration of the matter. A communication was received from the Papakura Town Board, advising that they were not interested in the proposed stock route as outlined by the board, and would not be represented at the conference. It was decided to support the New Lynn Town Board’s- recommendation to the Prime Alinister that the proposed Transport Commission is of no use to anybody except the Auckland City Council. The engineer reported that the plans of the district water reticulation scheme would be ready for the next meeting of the board. Nine tenders were ,-eceived for the formation of Coxhead’s Road, the prices ranging from £390 to £686, and it was decided that the acceptance of a tender be left with the chairman and engineer.

DISPUTE OVER CAR CASE AT HAMILTON A dispute between a car owner and a garage proprietor over a Nash car handed in for sale was decided by Air. Justice Blair in the Supreme Uourt yesterday. Plaintiff, Harold Richard Turnbull, claimed £125 from Stanley J. Blackmore as the price of a car. Blackmore Claimed the car was intended as part payment on a new Nash. He admitted a debt of £IOO, which was received on the resale pf the car, less the . cost of repairs. The judge awarded £9O, remarking on the necessity of having written agreements in deals of this description. TAUMARUNUI NEWS OHURA COUNCIL MEETS Among other matters dealt with at the monthly meeting of the Ohura County Council was a motion by Cr. Caird to the effect that the council emphatically objects to taking over portions of the Hiwi section of the Te Kuiti-Bulls Main Highway, as mentioned in a recent letter from the district engineer, until such time as the road is properly completed, and arrangements made for special maintenance. The motion was carried. The necessary steps are to be taken for the issuing of temporary debentures for a loan of £5,000, and arrangements will be made with the bank for an extended oxerdraft to that amount. It was decided to support the Taumarunui County in its efforts regarding the land problem, and it was resolved that the Alinister of Lands be invited to visit the district to discuss the whole question. Acting under authority from the Alinister of Agriculture, the council resolved to declare barberry a noxious weed throughout the county. The Wairere Electric Power Board advised that as the board could not obtain permission to increase the headworks at the Wairere Falls it would not be possible to supply the Ohura County with power from that source, but if application was made the Government might consider supplying from its Waikato plants. Lady May, Mr. R. Patterson’s smart little flyer, succeeded in winning for her owner the last race in the Alanunui Pigeon Club’s first young bird series. Mr. W. Robson presided over the annual meeting of the Athletic Football Club, and expressed pleasure at seeing so large a gathering of members and club supporters. The meeting placed on record its appreciation of the services rendered to the club by Messrs. S. Canty and W. Robson. Twenty-five new players were elected members of the club, and the following officers elected for the coming season:—Patron, Mr. W. Slipper; president, Mr. J. Rae; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. E. Gardiner, W. J. Hodges, A. Olds, G. Hamill, W. West, P. Meredith, G. E. Manson, D. Al. Simmons, C. A. Boles, W. Johns, H. Bosnian, R. Winger, W. Maurer and W. Rees; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. Simons, L. Turrell and E. Gardiner.
The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. K. S. Williams, has advised the Taumarunui Chamber of Commerce, through its secretary, Mr. R. 11. Caitcheon, that it is not possible for him to indicate when he will be able to again visit the Taumarunui district. * Air. T. E. Haughey, who has for some time held the position of coaching foreman in the Railway Department at Taumarunui, has gone to Marton on transfer, his position here being filled by Air. G. C. Foster, of Auckland. The business people of Taumarunui are at present conducting a “Buy at Home” campaign. A representative committee has the matter in hand, and it is hoped by various means to arouse greater interest in local business houses.
