THAMES TROTS HIKUTAIA HANDICAP DIVISION NECESSARY (Special to THE SUXJ THAMES, To-day. With thp remarkable acceptance of 3S contestants for the Hikutaia Handicap at the Thames fixture on Saturday, it was only to be expected the club would find it necessary to run the event in two divisions. Twentysix of the runners figure on the front of the handicap, so that even with the two heats there will be a big scramble off the end. With commendable enterprise the executive of the progressive country club increased the stakes in appreciable proportion, and this no doubt had a good influence as a deciding factor with owners when the acceptances were due. The divisions have been arranged early and the draw is as follows: — First Division. —First, £65: second, £10:Don Juan, It.; Nelson Dillon, It.; Warplane, It.; Kilty, It.; Warspite, It.; Margaret Wallace, It.; Araroa, It.; Ben Zolock, It.; Edna Thorpe, It.; Vanity Boy, It.; Boston Chimes, It.; Trixie Thorpe, it.; Regret, It.; Roylette, 12 yds; Nella Dillon, 12; Gold Star, 24; Beauty Spot, 24; Golden Park, 36; Bell Dial, 48. Starting the Heats All horses shall proceed to the race track from the bird cage and after having done a preliminary shall be divided into two divisions in accordance with the list compiled. The first division shall then proceed to the starting post and the horses in the second division will return to the birdcage and as directed by the steward in charge to a position in the saddling paddock. After the first division has been run and first division horses return to the birdcage, the horses of the second division will proceed to the starting post and the starter on receiving a signal from the stewards that# the course is clear shall without delay dispatch the second division. No horseman shall drive in both divisions. Operating the “Tote” The totalisator will operate as in the case of an ordinary race. The numbers of all horses engaged will be allocated on the machine, which will be closed prior to the start of the first division. The whole of the money available for dividends shall be paid on the first horse in each division as if they had run a dead heat, and no dividend shall be payable on horses running second. WHANGAREI CARD MELISSA’S HANDICAP Owing to Melissa’s name being omitted from the list of entrants forwarded for the Portland Hack Handicap at the forthcoming Whangarei meeting, the filly was not originally handicapped. Mr. F. J. McMailemin, + iie club weight adjuster, has allotted Melissa 9.13 in the race in question.
