BIRKENHEAD HIGHWAY

CONSTRUCTION DIFFICULTY Difficulty with the construction of the main highway at Birkenhead through poor foundation was reported by the engineer, Mr. A. A. Murray, at the meeting of the Waitemata County Council. Moisture came to the surface when bitumen was spread on the metal surfacing. „ . . _ A similiar condition at Raetihi, the engineer, had been overcome by treating the road with the heating method. The present type of road being constructed at Birkenhead was not successful, and he was awaiting a visit from Mr. Tindle, a highways engineer, with a view to adopting a new I method of construction.
