Tenders Opened for New Railway Station
POSSIBLE START NEXT MONTH GOODS SHEDS NEARLY FINISHED Tenders for the new railway station at Auckland are being opened at Wellington to-day. It is believed that a few weeks will elapse before the placing of a contract is announced, but the contractor should be getting his plant on the job by the end of April. The station site is sufficiently advanced to enable the work of erecting the station to be started as soon as the tender is accepted, but the excavation for the passengers’ subway are not yet undertaken. Much of th© excavation work will of necessity have to remain till last, however, as the main approach to the station will be across the present main line. , A great deal of adjustment will be required in the yard itself, as the arrangement of the work, without inteference with the present marshalling and general traffic movements, 1s difficult. The erection of the new goods sheds is nearing completion, and it is expected that the contract will be finished by the end of April or the first week in May. The floors ar« almost finished, and the plastering of the walls and ceiling is well advanced. The transfer from the old to the new goods sheds will occupy nearly three months, so that the beginning of August will arrive before the old sheds are done away with, and the new sheds thoroughly in working order.
