MANY WEEK-END FIRES

HOUSES AND SHOPS AFLAME OUTBREAKS IN GRASS Fire totally destroyed two houses and one shop during the week-end, and one house and two shops were badly damaged. Three small grass fires gave a little trouble. An unoccupied eight-roomed house in Ranfurly Road East, One Tree Hill, was seen to be on fire early on Saturday morning. The flames spread quickly from the rear through the whole building. The One Tree Hill Parnell and Remuera brigades all turned out, but the lire had too good a hold. An adjacent house wass;. -d with some difficulty. The building was owned by Mr. Hendry, of Halsey Avenue. One Tree Hill, and had been unoccupied for some time. An old house in King’s Road, Panmure, was destroyed about the bam a time. It was :t double structure, being occupied by Miss M. Kilkenny and Mr. and Mrs. Henry. There were no means of fighting the flames, but willing helpers saved most of Miss Kilkenny’s furniture. A little after 2 o’clock yesterday morning a single storeyed fruit shop in New North Road. Morningside. was burnt down. The shop was occupied by Mr. A. Capedo, and was part of a block of seven shops owned by the Alberton Building Company, which is insured for £2.500 in the Norwich Union office. The adjacent shops were saved through the efforts of the Mount Albert Brigade, but plate-glass windows were cracked by the heat. A policy for £2lO on Mr. Capedo’s stock and fittings is held in the Royal office. LESSER DAMAGE A grocery shop occupied by Messrs. Eaton Brothers, in ICaraugahape Road, was damaged a little before 8 p.m. yesterday. One upstairs room of the block was damaged before the brigade could extinguish the blaze. The building is insured for £1,200 with the South British Insurance Company. Fire damaged a drapery shop in Karangahape Road occupied by Mr. G. A. Barker, on Saturday evening. The brigade was able to save only three rooms on the top floor. The building is owned by the City Council and is insured for £3OO in the South British office. Mr. and Mrs. Barker were absent in Helensville at the time. The Onehunga Brigade was called out to a grass fire in Ngapuhi Road nbout 5 o’clock on Saturday evening. An outbreak in Western Park was extinguished by the "Western District Brigade at 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. A little later the City Brigade was summoned to a grass fire in Kirk Street, Archhill. A fence was slightly damaged. Children are thought to have caused this last outbreak.

DAIRY FACTORY BURNED

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, To-day. Information lias been received that the Cape Egmont Dairy Factory was destroyed by fire early this morning. The factory was a wooden building erected about 30 years ago. The origin of the fire was a complete mystery. Apparently it started in. the butter room. A quantity of proi duce was destroyed, but some cheese in a concrete store room was saved, though posibly it was damaged. The boiler room was also saved. The factory and contents were insured for £11.300 in the Phoenix Office.
