BRIGADIER-GENERAL ANLEY DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER Following a long period of ill-healtb, the death of Brigadier-General W. B. Anley, Croix de Guerre, D. 5.0., Royal Garrison Artillery, occurred in a pri T vate hospital in Auckland on Friday. General Anley was 56 years of age, and arrived in Auckland early in November last with Mrs. Anley. He had been residing at Ladies’ Mile, Remuera. In 19.17 General Anley, for distinguished war service was awarded the D. 5.0., and in the following year the Croix de Guerre. He was also twice mentioned in dispatches. Born at Ryde, in the Isle of Wight, General Anley was one of a family which had representatives in both the army and the navy, an uncle being Sir Baker Russell. Deceased leaves a widow but no family. The funeral, with full military honour, took place on Saturday at the Hillsborough Cemetery. Archdeacon McMurray officiated, and the pallbearers were returned soldiers.

Press Association. DUNEDIN, Sunday. The death occurred at Macandrew’s Bay yesterday of Mr. Colin Macandrew, aged 78 years, a son of the late Mr. James Macandrew, second superintendent of the Otago Province.

Snowball, Speaker of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, aged 68.—A. and N.Z. The late Mr. O. R. Snowball was a barrister and solicitor and had been a member of the State Legislative Assembly, representing Brighton, since October, 1909. He was born at Wokingham, Darlington, England, and was educated at Carlton College and Melbourne University. He was elected Speaker on July 6. 1927.
