Record for the Race
LAUGHING PRINCE SCRAPES HOME
< Special to mr JE SUNJ
WELLINGTON, To-day. The Wellington Racing Club concluded its autumn carnival at Trentham on Saturday in dull weather. The track was in first-class order and conducive to last times. A Second Win for Nucleus Bright Bay was a solid favourite for the High-Weight Handicap, but the ultimate winner, Nucleus, who scored on the opening day, was at very liberal odds. From a good start Mandarine was the first to show out, but after the field had gone a furlong Rotowhero displaced him in the lead. Rotowhero led along the back and across the top from Lancer and Uralla, with Clavers Handy and Xucleus last. Lancer and Rotowhero w'ero the first into the straight, but unwinding a strong run over the last furlong. Nucleus beaded Bright Bay and beat him home by two lengths. Clavers was half a length away third, followed by Lancer, Rotowhero, and Uralla. The winner who has made a great improvement during the past few months was responsible for an attractive performance. She was a long way back five furlongs from home, but she finished in very determined fashion in the straight, an .l was‘going away from her opponents at the end. The Fsivourite Beaten Duke Abbey was backed down to a short price for the Hutt Handicap, but after looking a winner at the straight entrance failed to finish on and was beaten into i ird place. The favourite and White Fang were the leaders after three furlongs had been covered and they led into the straight from Crown Area, Cerf, Bon Jose, and Vertigern. Buko Abbey led at the false rail, where White Fang dropped out, but a little farther on Vertigern came through and quickly settled Buke Abbey. Vertigern led 50yds from the post, but finishing boldly, Crown Area got the verdict on the post by a head. Buke Abbey was a length away third, followed by Bon Jose, Damaris, Cerf and White Fang. Tiega met with interference at the five furlong post and fell. His jockey, Roy Reed, was unhurt. Star Stranger Lowers the Record Rapier was always favourite for the Trentham Gold Cup, but there \Vas also solid support for Star Stranger. Satrap attempted to lead all the way and though he was well clear entering the straight, the last time he tired over the last furlong and Star Stranger beat him home by half a length. Rapier | was in trouble four furlongs from home, while the other runner. Wild Pigeon, was outclassed. Satrap was responsible for a wonderful performance, and Star Stranger had to lower an .Australasian record to beat him. Rapier disappointed even his ardent admirers and | did not perform as well as on the i opening day. Spearmiss Improves The Marita i Handicap resulted in a victory for the Greyspear tilly, Spearmiss. who acted as runner-up to" Court Jester in the Si l verst ream Handicap on the opening day. She was always nicely placed and making her effort half-way down the straight defeated the top-weight. Talisker. in impressive style. Court Jester again ran a good race and may show to advantage at the Rangitikei meeting this week. Episode Is Good The Pacific Handicap proved to be a good thing for Episode. The Limond tilly was a class above her opponents and when she got to the front in the straight she never left the issue in doubt. Mithra had every chance, but the best she could do was to run third. The Riccarton-trained filly, Prickles, was slow to beign. but finished gamely in the straight and beat Mithra for second place. Royal Buke and Miss Ransom were prominent for a long way, but both failed over the last furlong. Thrilling Finish The Autumn Handicap was a great hotting race, each of the runners being accorded heavy support. Joy j Bird was the early leader and she led j ilong the back from Set Sail. Great j Charter and Tresham. Set Sail joined Joy Bird in the lead five fur- i longs from home and the pair led into j the straight from Tresham and Great Charter. Set Sail dropped out inside j the distance, where Tresham got to j the front* Tresham looked the win- j
I tier 100 yards from the post, but finishing with great gameness, Laughing Prince beat Tresham by a short head, j Black Mint was a neck away third, while Set Sail, Joy Bird and O.ratrix were almost in line next. It was a thrilling finish and though Black Mint and Tresham were both a trifle unlucky. the merits of the race were undoubtedly with the winner. He was last into the straight, but unwinding a powerful run he smothered the leaders over the last half-furlong. Bright Glow Improves on First Day Cimabue was the elect of backers for the Suburban Handicap, but he failed to concede 151 b to Bright Glow, who was unlucky in the Thompson Handicap. Lysander again ran a good race and Broad Acre improved on his first day’s running. Money Order had every chance, but was eventually the last horse to pass the post. Is Likely to do Better King Midas, winner of the Belmont Handicap, just scrambled home by a head from Subdivision. However, he is likely to do a lot better now that lie has struck form, and he should be hard to dispose of in engagements near at hand. Subdivision ran a good race aVid will soon be led in a winner. Mendip finished on well into third place and should show to even better advantage in the near future. Kahu Ariki was prominent till the straight entrance was reached, but she was w'ell back at the end. Concluding results: AUTUMN HANDICAP Of £800; 1 mile 3 furlongs 4 LAUGHING PRINCE (T. A.
