BLINDED BY SMOKE
WOMEN LOST IN BURNING BUILDING PAPAKURA SHOPS DAMAGED (From Our Own Correspondent.) PAPAKURA, Friday. Fire destroyed a building contain | g two shops, with living accommodation, owned by Mr. Bradbury, and occupied by Mrs. Kerr, on the Great South Road early this morning. The sole occupant, Mrs. Kerr, was nearly caught in the burning building. Mrs. Kerr was awakened when the heat broke a plate-glass window, and she ran outside. A member of the Pire Brigade wITs also aroused by the fire and gave the alarm, and the brigade promptly turned out. Mrs. Kerr returned to the building to try and save her personal belongings, but the smoke confused her and she could not find her way out. The brigade heard her cries for assistance, but she managed to make her escape without their aid. The flames were soon extinguished but the interior of the shops were severely damaged. One shop was unoccupied, and Mrs. Kerr, who lost all nor stock and effects, had intended moving to-day. The damage is estimated at several hundred pounds. The building was insured in the South British Office.
