CHEMICAL MANURES
The following is a list of the most commonly-used chemical manures, together with the amounts of each to QUICK-ACTING Sulphate of ammonia—Joz a sq yd, or lib a rd. Nitrate of soda —*oz a sq yd, or 11b a rd. Superphosphate of —2oz a sq yd, or 41b a rd. Bone meal —3oz a sq yd, or 51b a rd. The quick-acting chemicals have to be applied either immediately before a crop is put in, that is, when the ground is being finally raked over prior to sowing or planting—or during the growth of the crop, then being sprinkled between the rows and hoed under the surface. Beds which are to receive only such chemicals should be autumn or winter dug, compost or other humus-making materials being worked in at the same time, and then left rough until required for use. SLOW-ACTING Basic slag—3oz a sq yd, or 61b a rd. Steamed bones —3oz a sq yd, or 51b a rd. Kainit —2oz a sq yd, or 41b a rd. Sulphate of potash—loz a so yd, or 21b a rd. Half-inch bones —6oz a sq yd, or 101 b a rd. The slow-acting chemicals, particularly basic slag, must be applied as early in autumn as possible, otherwise they do not benefit the crops the following sason. They are best distributed over the land immediately after digging and just pricked into the surface with a fork. Here, again, only the best results are obtained when they are used in conjunction with humusmaking material.
