FIRE AT PAPATOETOE
SIX-ROOMED HOUSE BURNED (From Our Own Correspondent.) PAPATOETOE, To-day. Another outbreak of fire occurred at Papatoetoe at about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon, when a six-roomed house, owned and occupied by Mr. WKing, at the corner of Park Avenue and Portage Road, was totally destroyed. Mrs. King had finished washing at about 2.30 o’clock, and was in the township, about a mile distant. Dense smoke was noticed issuing from the washhouse, attached to the house, by Mr. W. Tremaine, who, accompanied by Jack Green, hurried to the outbreak, and managed to rescue a motor-cycle from the garage which was destroyed. Determined attempts were made by a number of onlookers to save some of the effects, but they were unsuccessful owing to the heat and the smoke. The Otahuhu Fire Brigade was called by telephone, and arrived on the scene in quick time, but was unable to be of any assistance. The house was insured in the North British Insurance Company, and the furniture in the New Zealand Insurance Coy. The amounts are not available.
