Grimmett in Form

AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS AT WANGANUI A SPARKLING DISPLAY Press Association. WANGANUI, To-day. The Wanganui representatives were left in a rather hopeless position at the conclusion of the first day’s play against the Australian cricket team yesterday. »• Batting first, Wanganui was dismissed for 83 runs, Grimmett proving the downfall of eight men for the small total of 30 runs. The Australians at the wickets gave a sparkling display and had lost three wickets for 230 when stumps were drawn. Ponsford and Schneider opened the visitors’ innings, Holland and Kerwin bowling. Runs came slowly at first, only three being scored off six overs. After being at the crease half an hour Schneider opened his account with a smartly-run single. Smart fielding helped considerably to keep down the runs. However, the batsmen settled down and the score steadily mounted. The spectators were given a splendid exhibition of smart running and backingup between the wickets. When play stopped for the afternoon tea adjournment the total was 109 without loss. With the total at 210 Ponsford was just short of his century. A four off Williams saw him reach his goal, but with the succeeding ball he was cleanbowled. When an appeal against the light at 5.45 was upheld the visitors’ total was 230 for the loss of three wickets. With Jackson at seven and Grimmett at 28, play was resumed at 11.30. Runs continued to come steadily, Jackson making many delightful strokes on the off. At the luncheon adjournment to-day the Australians had lost six wickets for 329. After Jacksoi*’,s departure play was quiet. The War\ranui bowling was of a good length and the fielding was keen. Scores are: —■ WANGANUI. First Innings.
