OLYMPIC SWIMMERS

ATTACK ON RECORDS NO NEW MARKS SET TOO SOON AFTER TRIP About 1,000 people packed the Tepid Baths last evening on the occasion oi' j the appearance of Misses Ena Stockley (Auckland) and Kathleen Miller (Otago), two of the Dominion’s repre- i sentatives to go to the Olympic Gaines at Amsterdam. It was a pleasing tribute to the two swimmers, who returned this week from a victorious tour of Australia, I where they each won all championship ; events for which they entered, j The president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. lE. 11. Potter, Mayor of I Mount Eden, congratulated the ladies upon their successes in Australia and also upon their selection in the Olympic team. The carnival itself was an excellent one, and every race was so handicapped that very close finishes resulted. MISSED BY A FRACTION The attempt on the 100 metres record of 74 1 -ss, held by Miss P. Hoeft, made by Miss E. Stockley failed by 3-ss. Miss Stockley was paced by A. E. Baird. She got away to a great start, but made a bad turn at the first lap, and this no doubt affected her chances of lowering the record. She covered the first length in 19s, the second in 42 2-ss, the third in 66 4-ss, and completed the distance in 755. Failure also attended the attempt on Miss G. Shand’s 440yds record of 6m Ss by Miss K. Miller. Paced by J. Enwright for 200yds and by A. E. Baird over the remainder of the distance, Miss Miller made a solid pace, but she failed by 6 3-ss. Her times were: 100yds, 75 2-ss; 200yds, 2m 41 3-ss; 300yds, 4m 11 2-ss; 400yds, 5m 40 2-ss; and 440yds, 6m 14 3-ss. MISS ROBERTSON’S FINE RACE The two champions also came out in the 66 2-3yds handicap, but were beaten by Miss P. Robertson, a brilliant young sprinter, while Miss D. Magee, who beat Miss Stockley at the Auckland championships, got second place after a great swim. The two champions also gave an exhibition swim. The men’s 220yds handicap was a great race, and was hotly contested throughout, do Loree getting the verdict by 3yds from Brooking. The remainder of the events were keenly contested and provided a thoroughly enjoyable evening’s sport. OLD-TIMER COMES BACK An exhibition of diving from extraordinary angles was given by the old favourite Con Welson, whose laughable efforts created roars of laughter. The officials conducted the carnival without a hitch, and the large attend- ' ance should greatly assist the. funds to send Misses Stockley and Miller to ’ the Games. A carnival, the first of what will become an annual affair, was held in the Calliope Dock yesterday afternoon when the trainees from the Philomel and the trawler Kakakura gathered in large numbers.to provide an excellent afternoon’s sport. Commander Bradley, R.X., was present, as were several officers and friends of all ratings, making a large attendance. The programme was put through in a manner that could well be copied by other swimming bodies. There was no hitch, and the sailors thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The trophies, consisting of four silver cups, wristlet watches and medals were purchased out of the boys’ recreation funds and made an attractive display. The 200yds silver cup was won by A.
