Miss Ethel Simmonds is the guest of Mrs. Ralph Harris at Bayswater. Mrs. L. McDonald left Auckland last evening for a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Mervyn Reid and Miss Margery Vaile. of Auckland, passed through Hamilton last week-end. Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Suttee, of Papatoetoe, left by the Niagara this week for England, via America. Miss m Phyllis Fordham, of Kelburn, Wellington, is the guest of Miss F. Tannock-Dawson, Remuera. ♦ * * Mrs. N. L. Macredie, of Dunedin, is spending a holiday in Auckland with Mrs. P. Webster of Herne Bay. Mrs. W. Macassey is a visitor from Christchurch to Auckland and is staying with friends in Devonport. Mrs. R. Wright, of Wellington, who has been spending a holiday in Auckland returned home last evening. Mrs. A. P. Wylie, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to Auckland and Hamilton, has returned home. Miss Doreen Stone, of Whangarei, is in town and is staying with Miss Audrey Meredith, of Dilworth Avenue. Mrs. M. Griffiths has returned to town from a visit to Takapuna, where she was the guest of Mrs. J. Fotheringham. * * « Mrs. O. Hemingway, who has been visiting Taranaki for a few days, returned to Auckland by car on Wednesday. Mrs. W. W. Snodgrass, who has been on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. C. Duff, of Cheltenham, lias returned to Nelson. * * * Mr. and Mrs. J. FL Beale, of Upland Road, Remuera, leave to-day by the Maunganui on an extended trip to England. Mrs. Oliver and Mrs. Cogneau, of Sydney, who have been staying at the Grand Hotel, left for a visit to Rotorua yesterday morning. Mrs. L. C. Hilliard, who has been spending some time in Auckland, leaves to-day by the Maunganui, on her return to Sydney. * * * Mrs. S. L. Massina, of Melbourne, who is visiting Auckland, is staying with her father, Mr. Robert Farrell, Clifton Road, Takapuna. Tho Rev. Margaret Sharpe, who was recently in Wellington and preached in the Unitarian Church, is now in Australia, and said some kind things about New Zealand. She also paid a. fine tribute to that other woman preacher, Miss Maude Royden. “You are very lucky to be having her visit you,” she said. “She’s a wonderfully fine woman; an inspired preacher, if she is at her best; very human, practical, and sensible, lovable, and outspoken, and respected by everybody who knows her. I have the very highest admiration for her.” In the pulpit Miss Royden wears a dark dress, white liar and a little dark toque.
Mrs. O’Meara and Miss O’Meara, of Gisborne, who have spent some months at Royal Court, left yesterday for a visit to Rotorua prior to returning Home. Mrs. E. Bowley, who has been staying at Royal Court with her husband, the Sussex cricket coach, left with Mr. Bowley for Wellington last evening, to join the Mataroa for England. * * * Mr. and Mrs. Jones, of Levin, Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Bostock and Miss Y. Smith, of Perth, Miss E. Cable, of Sydney, Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Rice, of Christchurch, and Mrs. Baty, of Wellington, are staying at the Albert Hotel. Miss M. C. Blaxland has accepted the invitation of Alderman A. Horner Fletcher, the new Mayor of Armidale (N.S.W.), to fill the role of Mayoress. Miss Blaxland states that hex* principal reason for accepting the honour was the fact that the Mayor was a returned soldier. There have been other single girl mayoresses in Australia, but they have usually been related to the chief citizen. The Hon. Katharine Beryl O’Brien, daughter of Lord Lucius O’Brien, Earl of Inchiquin, and direct descendant of the Kings of Munster, has been on a visit to Australia. The Hon. Katharine is now on her way home to Dromoland Castle, County Clare, via Java and the East. Only 29 years of age, she has been travelling the world alone, and recently spent some time in New Zealand. The ITon. Donough O’Brien, brother of the ITon. Katharine, married Miss Anne Thesiger, daughter of Lord and Lady Chelmsford.
