REMAND OPPOSED
MOTORIST CHARGED FATALITY AT OPOTIKI (From, Our Own Correspondent.) OPOTIKI, To-day. When Frederick Charles Parkinson appeared in the Police Court to-day on remand, charged with driving a motor vehicle while in a state of intoxication, the police asked for a remand for eight days. Mr. Bunkale, counsel for defendant, strongly objected to a further remand. He said the police should be able to go on with the case and stated they had acted hastily in making the charge, as there was absolutely no evidence to prove defendant was drunk. The police said they could not go on with the charge to-day as the principal witness. Detective McLeod, was absent up the coast. The Bench agreed with counsel’s objection, and said they were of the opinion that it was not a fair thing to keep the charge hanging over Parkinson’s head. After argument, the court agreed to a remand till Tuesday. Parkinson was further charged that on March 9 at Opotiki he did negligently drive a motor vehicle thereby causing the death of Amohaere Tarau. On this charge he was also remanded till Tuesday.’
