VICTORIA LEAGUE

A SUCCESSFUL YEAR INCREASE IN MEMBERSHIP The report presented at the eighteenth annnal meeting of the Auckland branch of the Victoria League, held last evening, discloses one of the most successful years on record. The report, which was read by Mr. J. IT. Luxford, states that the membership now stands at 1,290, an increase of over a hundred on the previous year’s roll. The report continues: “The twelfth annual Daffodil Day was held on September 1 and was most successful, the net proceeds amounting to £3OO Is 7d. From this sum £2OO was distributed as follows: Plunket Society, £ls; Free Kindergartens, £6O; Boy Scouts’ Association, £65; Girl Guides’ Association, £10; Navy League, £10; St. John Ambulance, £10; completion of Hospital Cot Fund, £10; Young Citizens’ League, £2O. We also gave £ls 15s to the Mayor’s Unemployment Fund. HELPING ENGLISH BOYS “Every English boy coming to the Auckland district receives a letter of welcome from our secretary, offering books and magazines and advice. Many of them answer our letters, and we never allow anyone to arrive without receiving the letter on board ship with, our address and asking the recipient to call at the league rooms. “Up till November, well over 2,000 books, besides magazines and newspapers, were sent to back-block settlers, schools and English public school boys. “An important work done was the raising of money toward equipping a cot at the Children’s Hospital, and a very successful concert was given at which the sum of £97 was raised. The balance of the money needed was given by the Victoria League (Daffodil Day). A successful evening was given in St. Mary’s Hall in aid of the committee’s sweet stall on Daffodil Day.” The balance sheet showed that there was a credit balance of £BB9 15s on the year’s work. Referring to a debate given during the year by graduates of the Auckland University College, Mr. Luxford said that the effort showed that there were still young men coming on who would be able to hold their own in world politics in years to come. “Such a record as the league has for the past year,” said the Hon. G. J. Garland, “makes us proud to belong to an organisation which aims at bringing together people who think that theirs is the best Empire in the world.” In her presidential address, Miss J. A.
