LITTLE THEATRE
DUNSANY’S “IF” The producer of the Auckland Little Theatre Society, Mr. Kenneth Brampton, is particularly satisfied with the ladies who are playing in “If,” the play by Lord Dunsany, to be produced at the concert chamber of the Town Hall on March 28 for a season of four nights. It is not only a question of ability that makes for the good player, but also suitability, and in this respect he feels that he has been particularly fortunate. Miss Marie Gaudin and Miss Joy Bartley are playing Miralda and Mary respectively, and the producer has little doubt that they will both be conspicuous successes in these parts. The former will play Queen of A 1 Shaldomir, and the latter the middleclass wife of a middle-class man who later reigns as king. Their work at rehearsal has been excellent, and the members of the society may look forward with confidence to excellent results from these two. “If” is a remarkable and fantastic play, written with all Dunsany’s charm and subtlety. It is the most ambitious thing the Little Theatre Society has yet attempted.
“Annie Laurie,” starring Lillian Gish, the unforgettable star of “The White Sister,” and “The Scarlet Letter,” is one of the outstanding productions to be released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer this year. The story of this film is based on the immortal ballad of the same name, and depicts the most dramatic and colourful era in Scottish history, the Glencoe Massacres. Authentic to the last detail, it carries a sublime appeal to all mankind.
