Too Much Argument

CAUSE OF UNEMPLOYMENT LOCAL BODIES NEED LEAD “Someone should give the local bodies a lead and encourage them to get on with the jobs without so much argument. Some of the unemployment is definitely due to the arguments and delay/* Mr. J. A. C. Allum made this statement at the meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce’s Council yesterday. “Are none of the local bodies aware of the seriousness of the position 7” asked the chairman. Mr. W. T. Merritt. “Yes, probably they are,” replied Mr. Allum, “but a lead is necessary.” Mr. .Allum said that unemployment had made the present position a distressing one. It had been affected by the cessation of some public works, the executive of the chamber should consider the question of recommending that all local bodies review the works of their districtsThe working people had suffered in the last 12 months and they would do so for the next year or so. There should be an endeavour to effect a compromise, conclude the arguments and get on with the necessary works. If the local bodies would survey the jobs the council would give its assistance to expedite the work. Mr. A G. Lunn said that a committee had already considered the unemployment problem thoroughly and made its recommendations, j Discussion was held over until the secretary brings down his report.
