After the Races
WOMAN MOTORIST IN TROUBLE CHARGED WITH INTOXICATION (Special to THE SUN.) WANGANUI, Thursday. A charge of driving a motor-car while in an intoxicated condition was brought against a woman a.t the Magistrate's Court to-day. ~ Evidence of a contradictory nature was given. One woman witness said defendant, whose name was ordered to be suppressed, was unsteady on her feet when she got out of the car at Maxwell, after a collision had occurred. Another witness said defendant had assured her that she had been driving for 14 years, and also testified to seeing the "latter take out from the car what appeared to be a bottle of whisky, and place it in the pocket of her dust coat. Arthur Collins, one of a party travelling to New Plymouth on the clay in question, said defendant had offered to pay damages and also to shout for them from a bottle of whisky which she had in her possession. He attended to defendant’s car, whereupon she came up, patted him on the shoulder and said he was a good little chap. A good deal of other evidence was adduced, after which defendant gave evidence. She said she left Wellington after the races and travelled all night to her home. She came into Wanganui next day and went to Wanganui East to collect rents. In the afternoon she transacted a certain amount of business, and only had a glass of stout at lunch time with a friend. After leaving the garage that afternoon, witness made a number of other calls. Medical evidence showed that the symptoms outlined by counsel could be brought about by shock. The case was eventually adjourned until next week.
