Agrion Sent Home Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s three-year-old Agrion will not be raced again this season. He has. been sent home to his owner's station, where he will have a spell for a few months, after which he will doubtless return to Riccarton to be tried again for a campaign as a four-year-old. When at his best Agrion is a high-class galloper, as he has shown in some of his races when prepared under difficulties. It is very unfortunate that unsoundness has interfered with his training throughout the season. Had he been thoroughly sound his race records would have made much better reading. All Trained at Paeroa The Ohinemuri meeting is to be held on Saturday and Monday, and at present there is in the vicinity of a dozen horses being trained, on the local course at Paeroa. J. W. Cathro has three in work, the trio being the three-year-old filly, Auriculus, a two-year-old colt named Hiata, who is a half-brother to Miss Potoa, and Mauriaena, a sister to Auriculus. Other horses who receive their essays on the course are Scat, Miss Egypt, Billikins, Gold Clip, Ohinemuri and Venus Abbey. Ran Well the First Day Notwithstanding his big impost of 11.2, Quincoma was the ultimate favourite for the Puni High-Weight Handicap on the first day at Pukekohe. He ran a creditable race, too, but the pull in weights proved too much, and he was unable to quite reach Wiltshire. His effort on the second day, however, was far from satisfactory, for he tailed the field and was the last to pass the judge. The Quin Abbey gelding is to race at Paeroa on Saturday, and perhaps he may give a better account of himself at that meeting. Corinax is Good The Ellerslie mentor, J. Williamson, was in difficulties prior to the Franklin meeting, through being unable to obtain a suitable horseman for his candidate, Corinax, and it was not long before the race that he decided to give liis horse his chance. Perhaps if Fortune had smiled on the well-known trainer he may have secured first prize instead of being content with second, the Magpie gelding being always in a handy position. Corinax has developed into a good performer this season, and ‘as he is not set to carry prohibitive imposts just yet, perhaps he will not be long in saluting the judge. To Join the Jumpers At fhe conclusion of the Ohinemuri meeting Quincoma will be , dismissed from W. Townsend’s establishment and will take up his new quarters with R. Hall. The Roulston Bros., who own the Quin Abbey gelding, intend to give
him a jumping campaign this winter, and it was thought advisable to place him with the above trainer. There is no doubting the galloping ability of Quincoma, and if he shapes at all promisingly over the obstacles, as he should do, then his connections should experience a profitable winter. Won An Easy Race Subdivision enhanced his reputation at Pukekohe yesterday by the easy manner in which he accounted for the field in the Otaua Handicap. His second at the recent Te Aroha meeting was not forgotten, and as a result he was in favour for the above event. Shortly after the barrier rose he took command, and from there on was never troubled, winning with ridiculous eas:e. It is more than likely that we will see the Surveyor horse pushing himself to the front again before very long.
Not Her Usual Form Although BaTlymoy 11. is in good condition at present she ran far below her best when she failed to head off Prince Otto an Muscari, the only other starters in the Harrison Handicap on the second day at Pukekohe. When about three furlongs from home the chestnut mare began to drift, and from there on was never dangerous, finishing well behind her opponents. It was obviously not the form of the daughter of Sonning, and it is hoped that she will race more up to expectations when she is next produced. Rahepoto in Work Again The aged Maniapoto gelding,'Rahepoto, has been recommissioned, and will join the active brigade almost immediately. He is big in condition as
the result of his few months’ spell, but nevertheless appears as if he has been well looked after during his absence. With the prospect of the tracks losing their firmness, R. Conway’s representative should prove a decided asset to the jumping brigade this season. First Race in the South Poly dec tes, a recent arrival at Riccarton, will be racing-.at Waimate, and as it will be his first effort in the South his form will he followed with interest. He has run some useful races in hack company in the North Island, and he looks a useful sort to pay his way in open events later on. Big Races at Riccarton With thirty-six horses in,the Great Easter and twenty-six in the Great Autumn, the two leading handicaps at Riccarton have drawn a very satisfactory response from owners. The North Island has contributed seventeen to the Great Easter, with Reremoana, Hynanna, Kiosk, Crown Area, Joy King, Shirley and Cimabue among them, the Northern representation is strong. North Island stables claim only nine in the Great Autumn, but as they include Star Stranger, Hynanna, Joy Bird a.nd other recent winners, it is quite a good list. So far as the South Island is concerned, Riccarton stables provide thirteen in the Great Autumn, in each race. Money Order; Eulalie, Set Sail and Booster iii the short race and Rapier, Footfall, Set Sail and Pink
Note in the mile and a-half class will assist to provide class. Work at Ellerslie There was very little work of interest during training operations this morning. On the number three grass Blue Spear and Royal Trek were companions in a bout over six furlongs, registering 1.20 2-5 for their effort. Over the same ground Ardnalea easily beat Ossian, and was timed to cover the six furlongs in 1.20 2-5. Monday (R. Olive) was given a lesson over two pony hurdles, fencing them in good style. Royal Trek (S. Henderson), jumped a couple of pony hurdles, and his display was quite satisfactory for a beginner.
