Mermaids ’ Chance

NEW CITY BATH WILL GIVE WOMEN DIVERS AN OPPORTUNITY

NO COUNCIL OBJECTIONS The city’s diving girls will shortly be given an opportunity of showing off their prowess. What is more they will have an entirely new swimming pool, to which the city fathers, guardians of the public morals, have raised no formal objection. Moreover the baths will not be filled from the Auckland Harbour direct. They will be tepid, and they will have the latest thing in diving towers with adjustable spring boards. Finally, there will be no entrance fee, and the baths will be most exclusive —but not excluded. Again, the divers will be the attraction on which thousands of eyes wiH concentrate, and the bath itself will bo of concrete, 20ft long 8 ft deep, and 9ft wide. Their situation will be in the centre of the stage at the Regent Theatre, and the top of the baths will be level with the stage. The official opening will take place in a fortnight’s time, when a girls’ diving competition will bo staged, entries being received through the local swimming clubs. The prizes at present arranged will bo handsome. Possibly they will extend to a trip of a team to Australia, where New Zealand swimmers are in very good repute at present.
