TEST CRICKET
NEW ZEALAND ELEVEN ROWNTREE ONLY AUCKLANDER Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. The following cricket team has been selected to represent New Zealand against the Australians in the first
test match at Auckland, beginning on Saturday, March 24: T. C. Lowry (Hawke's Bay). F. T. Badcock (Wellington). H. M. McGirr (Wellington). C. S. Dempster (Wellington). H. Foley (Wellington). C. G. Finlayson (Wellington). R. W. Rowntree (Auckland). N. Gallichan (Palmerston North). G. Dickinson (Otago). W. E. Merritt (Canterbury). I. M. Hamilton (Canterbury). The following players were not avaliable:—Mills, James, Page and Blunt. The inability of four of the outstanding batsmen in New Zealand to play is a heavy blow to the batting strength of the side. The bowling, however, is strong. On this season’s form. Gallichan is lucky to be in the team, but the selectors evidently felt that a left-hand bowler was needed, especially as the Eden Park wicket favours a left-hander who can spin the ball. Finlayson's selection is the biggest surprise, as this player has not even represented his province. He is, however, a line all-rounder, and in his last two matches the Petone player has scored 10t> not out and 85, and taken five wickets for 104 runs.
