HARBOUR WORKS
NEW METHODS ON NORTH SHORE IMPROVED FERRY TERMINAL Improvements on the northern shore of the harbour were inspected by the members of the Auckland Harbour Board yesterday afternoon. pRACTICALLY the whole of the old wooden wharf at Victoria Road, Devonport, has been demolished. The new concrete wharf for vehicular traffic has been in use for some months; the piles for the new tee for the use of passenger boats are now being driven. The automatically-controlled bridge fn use for connecting the vehicular ferry boats with the main wharf was closely examined, a special demonstration of the working being given. The board members were decidedly pleased as this gear is the only example of automatic landing gear in use in the world, and is far ahead of anything else employed South of the line. The city terminal for vehicular traffic ii* to be remodelled presently; Devonport and Takapuna traffic will embark near the railway engine sheds. nd Xorthcote-Birkenhead traffic from Freeman’s Bay. A high-roofed covered way for the use of passengers at Devonport Wharf is b?ing provided. The building has walls of a new material, built up of lead, asbestos and bitumen-protected iron. Th e board members took the oppor- ■ miry of going over the reclamation work being carried out at the head of 'he wharf by the Devonport Borough Cour ell, which Is actively preparing for the extension of its concrete road- . ig system to link up with the new wharf approach. At the eastern reclamation area the rrl members saw a new method of Iding a retaining wall by using slabp.»d piles driven edge to edge.
