An Australian Who Made Good
T Off.V BROWNLEE, the Gee- ** long baritone, who is returning to Australia as one of the principals of the Melba-William-son Opera Company, will give a series of recitals in the Commonwealth at the end of the opera season. Mr. Brownlee is the first male singer of British birth to achieve the distinction of being placed on the regular roster of the Paris Opera. He made his debut there a year ago as Athaniel, in Massenet’s “Thais,” and one critic declared his was the best performance of the role that had been given in France. Mr. Brownlee will make his first operatic appearance in his own country in this role. It is possible that he may also appear in another of Massenet’s operas. This young Australian has sung in German and Italian operas besides French. He will take some of the Wagnerian roles in Australia, and will no doubt appear in some of the "Verdi operas.
