VARIATIONS IN SUN TIME

VALUE OF ASTRONOMICAL CLOCKS INTERESTING LECTURE Mention of modern electrically operated clocks which are so accurate that variations in the- sun and the stars can be noted was made by Mr. Noel Paton in a lecture given before the Auckland Astronomical Society last evening. Mr. Paton was speaking on the history of time-keeping devices through the ages, and traced their gradual development from the time of prehistoric man. Here the position of the sun was the only means of calculating the number of hours before dark. Then followed the sun dial the hour-glass, and later, the first crude clock. The last few years have shown a great development in the perfecting of time pieces for astromonical purposes, concluded the lecturer.
