BLOW TO WINE INDUSTRY
REDUCTION OF BOUNTY PROTESTS IN AUSTRALIA By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Tuesday. Importers of Australian wines are greatly perturbed over the Commonwealth Government’s proposal to reduce the export bounty which they say is likely to have tragic results in the Australian wine industry. One of the largest importers, interviewed by the Australian Press Association, pointed out that the great need of the trade was to stabilise prices, which was impossible if the Government frequently altered the bounty. During the last two years a splendid trade had been built up, and the proposed reduction was likely to undo all this good work. It would enable Australia’s great rivals, Tarragona and Lisbon wines, with 30 degrees of strength, to be sold for 2s a gallon cheaper than Australian of 34 degrees. A cable of protest has been sent to the Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, signed by the Burgoyne Company, the Emu Company, W. and A. Gilbey, and the Stephen Smith Company, on behalf of the Dominion Wine Merchants’ Association. —A. and N.Z.
