Under the Totem-Pole Chiefs and Braves
Dew of Dawn: No wonder this Brave was excited at the thought of returning to St. Heliers to live’. Redfeather agrees that surfing is the most splendid fun, especially when the waves are high enough to carry one far up on to the beach. Have you done any more fishing yet? Yes, Red Star seems much stronger; she has some faithful friends among the children of the Wigwam.
Gliding Moccasin: Your arrow sped straight and shining to the door of the Wigwam, Gliding Moccasin. How are your preparations for your fourth company birthday getting on? I do not know whether I shall be able to follow the trail that leads from the Great Chief’s door, but I am sure your celebrations will be well carried out. The South Auckland Rally will be exciting, and perhaps others of the Children of Redfeather will join you in it. What have you decided on for your illustration of the sentence you sent me? lam glad Red Star’s teepee is again open to the sunshine and that sometimes she is well enough to venture to the door. Greetings to this Brave. Red Leaf: The arrow which sped your news about the swimming shield to the Wigwam fairly quivered with excitement, Red Leaf. I rejoice with
come, to this new Guide Brave, and thanks for her neatly written report. I have made good use of it in the Corner to-night, as you will see. The door of the Wigwam is always open, you may be sure of a warm welcome whenever you come flying down the trail toward it. Harvest Moon: How did this Brave like her prize-winning drawing in print? 1 thought it came out splendidly. Thank you for the postal note. I handed it on to the right quarter. The captain has not yet arrived, but I am looking forward tremendously to seeing her. Of course Redfeather had to go and see first hand the Totem Pole dance in “Rose Marie,” and loved every minute of it. It was certainly wonderfully done. You could scarcely do anything else but enjoy a walk on the Cashmere Hills at this time of the year, but I am glad you and Doreen made the most of it, even to the giggles. Love to this faithful Brave. Little Pool: The Children of Redfeather welcome this scribe for the Tahutimai Company. It is splendid to know that you have enjoyed the Wigwam Page, and that your name has now been inscribed on the wellcarved Totem Pole. Your meeting on Mount Eden must have been really fine, and I hope that your anticipations for a good year for the company will be more than fulfilled. Many thanks to this new Guide-Brave from all round the ever-glowing fire. Silver Ripple: I am pleased to hear through your Captain that you have been appointed scribe for the St. Mary’s Company. When will an arrow from your bow quiver to the door of the Wigwam? Greetings and all good wishes. Smoke Signal: The hand of goodfellowship to this new Chief who has followed the well-worn trail that leads to the Totem Pole. Your report was very interesting, and I was glad to have it. I will always be pleased when this chief’s bow looses a shaft toward the Wigwam. Fluttering Leaf: There was the soft and distant sound of rustling down the leafy trail, and Fluttering Leaf came dancing lightly along. You must have had a very jolly time with all your visitors, and I am sure the birthday cake was well appreciated. No wonder you were proud of your two Brownies. Every good wish. Young Poplar: Your arrow sped straightly toward the Wigwam, carrying your report of the St. David’s Company, for which many thanks. The happy circle of Chiefs and Braves around the Fire of Friendship widens in welcome to admit you. We trust you will join with us often. Flowing Gold: I have forwarded your letter to Red Star, and can imagine her pleasure when she receives it. Yes, this is the third arrow from your bow that has buried itself in the soft dark earth beside the Wigwam, but there is always room for another. You brought those pen-names in cleverly, Flowing Gold. There is always a corner in the tent of the Great Chief for a loyal little Brave. Red Star: I wonder if the teepee of Red Star is as gay with clear sunshine as the Great Chief’s tent is this morning! And gleaming in a golden square of light is an arrow from a well-loved Brave to treble the tumultuous happiness of the birds outside the Wigwam. Can Red Star guess who the little Brave is? ... It is good that your “off” days are over now. By now you will have had a silver arrow from Flowing Gold as well as from Dew of Dawn and Silver Wing. The Children of the Wigwam join me in sending you much love. Paddle Carver: Thanks to this Guide Brave for her interesting report of the Awataha Company, and congratulations on her investment as Leader of the Poppy Patrol. Redfeather has reason to be proud of her children.
Blue Fire: Once again the arrow whistled keenly through the air,'and a message from Blue Fire reached the Wigwam. It is a little tantalising to have to wait until next week for news of the party, but those whose names are carved deep on the Totem Pole must know the art of patience. Many happy returns of your birthday, Blue Fire. I do not think you need to worry about old age for a while. You are not quite in the sunset of life yet. Red Star keeps fairly well. I have not heard from Red Berry this week. Greetings and much love.
Flying Cloud : On a shaft of sunshine your arrow sped to the feet of Redfeather, and suddenly the perfume of belladonnas filled the Wigwam. I look forward to your long letter. No, I have never watched “underwater” swimming, but I can imagine what a fascinating occupation it would be. The love of Redfeather to her Maid of the Great Outdoors.
