BRITISH LEGION
RELIEF FOR N.Z. OFFICERS Messrs. Fuller-Hay ward have offered to devote the whole of the gross takings of a matinee to relieve the urgent need of three families of officers who were disabled through their service in the late war. Field-Marshal Lord Haig devoted the last years of his life to serving the British Legion. A Press cablegram from London last week quoted the following words of the Prince of Wales: “Earl Haig’s services to the country since the war were even greater than in war time; he inspired and steadied ex-service men, standing by them like a rock. He died in harness helping ex-service men. He created and inspired the British Legion and devoted the remaining years of his life to it.” Not long before his death Capt. G. Humphrey Davies, hon. Dominion secretary of the British Legion, wrote personally to him on behalf of two exservice men who were in distress in New Zealand, and by return he forwarded £IOO, which was spent in affording them temporary relief. The generous offer of Mr. Hayward makes it possible to hope that if it is seconded by the help of tlie public bolh by attending this matinee and by forwarding subscriptions to the honorary treasurer, Mr. E. J. F. Kennedy Southern Cross Building, a permanent improvement in the circumstances of three families of ex-service men may be effected. The film shown will be •Sorrell and Son,” at the Strand Theatre, on March 15.
Major-General Russell is personally helping, and also the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association. Lieut.Colonel E. H. Northcroft, D. 5.0., wiU give a short address.
