ONE-DAY TRIPS NO. 17
PUKEMATEKEO, from which glorious views may be had. This is the highest point in the Northern Waitakeres, being I,looft above sea-level. Follow the concrete road to Henderson and half a mile after passing the township at the church, leave the concrete by branching to the left. Now follow on, taking the direction from the Helensville sign, to Swanson. Pass through the settlement and after half a mile turn to the left up over the railway line. At the end of the metal, the mountain will be seen straight ahead. After 300 yards a clay track will be seen running up the hill (a milk stand is on the left hand side of the road just round the bend). Leave the car and walk to the Trig Station. From the top, the Waitakere Dam will be seen up the valley, with the remains of the old Cascade Falls at the near end. Distance from Auckland 18 miles.
The motor vehicle registration de- . partment of the Post Office has decided to make a charge for furnishing in- j quirers with the name and address of j the owner of any car with a given number. The decision to impose a fee is doubtless due to the action of certain local bodies who have been taking numbers by the hundred for speeds which are alleged to be dangerous. It is certainly rather a tall order to c?3i for two or three score addresses at once. * i
. A useful formula for making cylinder j black is as follows: —Mix gold-size i and lamp black together into a thick paste. Thin this paste with petrol or paraffin until it is quite fluid. insufficient petrol makes the black difficult to apply, and too much means that it will brush off. Run the engine after pointing, and the cylinder will take a • good dull black finish as the stuff dries. | If the cylinder is already hot the paint j will dry as it is put on.
