Your Nash — Its Care and Maintenance
A SUN special feature to assist the owner-driver to obtain the maximum results in performance by the proper care and treatment of his car.
Give your Nash a few minutes of your time each week, and you will be amply repaid by years of troublefree running. There are three main things that must be attended to: (1) Lubrication, i.e., oiling and greasing of engine and chassis; (2) electrical equipment; and (3) tyres.
The Nash owner has included in his car equipment an excellent instruction book, which he should study and follow to the letter. We are giving here merely a few hints. These general instructions apply equally to the Standard, Special, or Advanced models, but each model has of course more detailed specifications. The main thing to remember is correct lubrication. The engine oil should be completely changed every 1,000 miles. Watch the oil level daily, and keep it as near as possible to the full mark. Every 5,000 miles the oil pan should be removed, washed thoroughly, and all oil lines and the oil pump screen cleaned. Use a good engine oil of recognised high quality.
The internal working parts of the engine are lubricated under a pressure system, which is connected with the oil gauge on the dash. Always keep an eye on this indicator to see that the system is working, and take the car to a dealer immediately the gauge shows pressure of less than 201 b. Gear Box: Lubrication and cleaning —Maintain to level of filler plug with good heavy gear box oil. Drain, flush and refill every 5,000 miles.
Rear Axle: This should receive identically the same treatment as the gear box.
Clutch: The release bearing is the only part requiring lubricant. Use engine oil and work pedal several times; lubricate every 500 miles. Brakes' Heavy oil only is recommended for lubricating the brake, spring and steering connections. Do not use grease in the alemite oilers. Lubricate every 500 miles.
The lubrication system for the rest of the chassis—universal joints, use grease every 2,000 miles; distributor, use grease every 1,000 miles; rear wheel bearing, use grease every 2,000 miles; starter motor, use oil every 500 miles; other lubricating connections provided with oiler, every 500 miles. We come now to other features requiring regular attention. The battery needs careful attention. Keep the terminals clean. See that the level of the acid in the cells is kept above the top of the plates by the addition of distilled water. Test all cells with a hydrometer every month. Fully charged cells should read between 1,290 and 1,300. The spark plugs should be removed about four times a year, given a thorough cleaning and the points reset for a gap of2 .025 to .030. Be
sure that all plug's are the same. Operate the starter motor only when the ignition spark has been retarded; If the motor does not start, the engine the first time, be sure the engine fly-wheel has come completely to rest before applying the starter motor the second time. The radiator should be kept full with clean water. Once a month drain the system, flush out and refill. Tyres should receive regular attention and the pressures checked each week. Always run on the correct pressures for your model and body type, and keep the pressures equal. If every Nash owner gives attention to the points mentioned above a considerable benefit will be obtained in the way of greater reliability, more satisfactory running, and lowest possible cost.
