£BOO,OOO FROM OIL DEALS
“ Price of Republican Treachery ”

I’HE “Evening World,” in a copyright story, states that a mysterious new fund of over £BOO,OOO has been discovered in New York. The paper states that the fund accumulated between July 1921 and December 1922 at the time the naval oil leases were made in California and Wyoming.
“ALTHOUGH this fund is not directly linked with the “Teapot” scandals,” it says, “there is evidence indicating a direct connection with the oil deal?,” The fund is said to have been deposited, through a brokerage house, in the Domihioh Bank of Canada and converted into g j. per cent. Liberty Bonds. The article suggests that this fund may prove to be the source of the Liberty Bonds which the Senate Committee has been unable to connect with the company concerned with the management of the. fund. A message from Washington says that as the result of the recent “Teapot” disclosures the Senate heard a
demand from Senator Norris for the resignation of the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. A. W. Mellon, and a Democratic denunciation of Mr. H. F. Sinclair’s contribution of £52,000 to the Republican Party as “tlie price of Republican treachery to the nation,” by Senator Robinson, who stated that the gift could not now be atoned for. — A. and N.Z. In a message from Washington yesterday it was stated that the Secretary of the Treasury', Mr. A. W. Mellon, admitted that Mr. •W. IT. Hays, ex-Postmaster-General, sent him a package in 1923 containing £IO,OOO in Liberty bonds, which was part of Mr. H. F. Sinclair’s £52,000 donation to the Republican National Committee.
