William Henry Wilks, an interational safe-breaker and burglar, was shot dead by a constable at Manly. Wilks and confederates were seen about to break into tea rooms at North Steyne. His companion escaped, but after a chase over fences, through backyards, lanes and streets, Wilks produced a revolver and fired, when the pursuing constable closed with him. but the shot missed. The constable then fired, the bullet reaching Wilks’s heart. He died immediately.—A. and N.Z.
