EAST TAMAKI SPORTS

A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE WHITTEN CAPTURES TREBLE There was a large and enthusiastic gathering at the third annual meeting of the East Tamaki Amateur Sports Club, held on the East Tamaki Recreation Grounds on Saturday. The sport provided was keen and interesting, and some very close finishes were witnessed. The handicapping was good. In the cycling events, the honours of the day went to J. Whitten, a local rider, who won the three events in which he started. The mile and two-mile were won by about two lengths, but in the mile and a-half he was hard pressed by Penfold, eventually winning by a quarter of a wheel.

In the running events, the principal event of the day, the East Tamaki 120yds Handicap, was captured by H. Biggs on the 7yds mark, who beat A. J. Elliott, the scratch man, by two yards.

Added interest was given to the meeting by the inclusion of a number of hunting events, visitors being present from Clevedon and Ardmore, while the Pakuranga Hunt Club was well represented. The judging in this department was in the capable hands of Mr. S. Pilkington, of Matangi. Results:

AFTER THE SPORTS RECORD CROWD AT DANCE As a fitting finale to a successful sports meeting, held earlier in the day, the East Tamaki Sports Club held a very successful dance in the public hall on Saturday evening. There was a record attendance of residents of the district and a large number of visitors from the surrounding country. The hall had been tastefully decorated with brilliantly coloured streamers, and the walls were decked with feathery nikau palms, making a very fitting setting for the large number of dancers who graced the floor. Chalmer’s orchestra supplied the music, and Miss Blake played a couple of extras. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr. A. Baird. During the evening Mr. Jas. Ross presented Messrs. R. Whyte and T. Whyte with the medals donated by Mr. W. Potter for the 120yds local event. AUSTRALIAN CYCLISTS WIN AT WANGANUI STANDEN SECURES THREE RACES Press Association. WANGANUI, Sunday.
