The Log Book

PERSONAL. —Captain E. Harris has assumed command of the motor-vessel Otokia, relieving Captain A. R. Stewart for instructions. Mr. A. H. Howie has relieved Mr. D. N. McLeish as chief officer of the Wahine. The latter officer is awaiting orders at Wellington.

Air. H. W. Jones has reported from holidays, and has relieved Mr. J. J. Lyon, second officer of the Katoa, for his holidays.

OTOKIA LEAVES WELLINGTON. — The Union Company’s tanker Otokia left Wellington on Saturday afternoon for San Luis, California, to load a further cargo of oil for Wellington.

GALLIC CLEARS NORFOLK.—The White Star steamer Gallic is reported to have cleared Norfolk. Virginia, last Friday. The vessel sailed from Auckland on February_9 for New York, Halifax, Avonmouth, Liverpool and Glasgow.

QUERCUS SAILING.—Robert Millar and Company hopes to dispatch the tramp steamer Quercus at S o’clock this evening, when she will leave Chelsea for Westport for bunkers, before proceeding to Nauru Island to load phosphates for New Zealand or Australia. KING EGBERT FROM ANTWERP. — The King Line’s new motor-ship King Egbert cleared Balboa last Thursday, in continuation of her voyage from Antwerp to Auckland. The vessel is bringing a full cargo of basic slag, all of which is for discharge at Auckland. She is due about the beginning of April. IK ALA DUE TO-MORROW. —According to radio advice received by the local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company, the steamer Ikala will arrive at Auckland at noon to-morrow from St. John. The vessel has cargo for Wellington, New Plymouth, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australian ports.

HORORATA AT LONDON.—The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Hororata is reported to have reached London on Friday last with a cargo of New' Zealand produce. The vessel was dispatched from Auckland on January 24, for New' York, Halifax and London, via Panama.

WEST CONOB LEAVES LOS ANGELES. —Reported to have sailed from Lost Angeles last Thursday, the American steamer West Conob is bringing cargo from Pacific Coast ports for discharge at Auckland, Wellington. Dunedin and Bluff. She is due at Auckland on March 28. Henderson and Macfarlane, Limited, are the local agents. ATHENIC HOME. —Cabled news has been received by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company stating that their liner Athenic arrived at Southampton on Thursday morning and at London the next day, from Wellington. The vessel left Wellington on January 28 for Southampton and London, via Panama.

ECHUNGA DUE BACK AGAIN. — Messrs. Dalgety and Company advises that the Australian steamer Echunga is scheduled to return to Auckland next Friday with another full cargo of Newcastle coal for the New Zealand Government Railways. She sailed from Newcastle on Saturday last.

KING EDWIN SAILS TO-NIGHT. At 5 o’clock this evening, the King Line motor-ship King Edwin is to be dispatched from Auckland for Napier, Wellington, New Plymouth and Australia to put out the remainder of her cargo of case oil from Texas. The vessel is due at Napier at 5 o’clock on "Wednesday morning next. The New Zealand Shipping Company are the local agents.

RON A FROM SUVA. —With sugar for discharge at the works at Chelsea, the Colonial Sugar Company’s sugar steamer Rona arrived in the stream at Auckland at 12.30 a.m. to-day from Suva. The run from Suva was made in good weather. The Rona 4s to berth at Chelsea early to-morrow morning, and. after discharge of the local portion of her cargo, proceeds to Sydney to complete.

PAKEHA TO LOAD. —The Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Palceha is scheduled to reach Auckland from Australia on March 22 to commence loading for England. The vessel will also load at Opua, Timaru, Bluff, "Wellington and Port Chalmers. From Port Chalmers she is to be dispatched on April 15 for London, via Montevideo and Teneriffe.

MIDDLESEX DUE FRIDAY. The New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice from its Napier office stating that efforts are being made to dispatch the Federal Steam Navigation Company’s steamer Middlesex from there on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning next for Auckland. The vessel is due here on Friday, and is scheduled to sail finally the next, day for London, via New York and Halifax.

PORT BOWEN DELAYED.—Advice receiced by Heather, Roberton and Company. Limited, states the Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Bowen has been delayed at New Plymouth by bad weather. She is no wto leave for Auckland to-morrow to complete loading for London and "West Coast ports of the United Kingdom. The vessel is due on Thursday, and an endeavour will he made to dispatch her for London at the end of this week.

RADIO FROM THE YOSERIC. Messrs. Russell and Somers, Limited, are in receipt of a ralio report from the Andrew Weir steamer Yoseric, stating that the vessel expects to arrive in the stream at Auckland at daybreak tomorrow with a full cargo of jarrah from Bunbury. The vessel has been allotted a berth at King’s Wharf, and it is announced that she will complete discharge at Southern ports.

CANADIAN HIGHLANDER DEPARTS —The Canadian Highlander sailed from Auckland on Saturday afternoon. Owing to a slight congestion at Napier, the vessel’s itinerary has been altered. The Canadian Highlander now proceeds direct to Wellington, thence Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, back to Wellington, thence Napier and Auckland. She returns to this port about March 30 and is scheduled to clear Auckland finally the following day for New York, Boston and Montreal, via Panama.

NIAGARA ARRIVES. —En route from Sydney to Vancouver, the Union Company’s R.M.S. Niagara arrived in the stream at 5.45 o’clock this morning, and after pratique was granted, berthed at the Prince’s Wharf shortly after 8 a.m. The Niagara left Sydney at 4 p.m. last Thursday and experienced good weather for the run across the Tasman Sea. If, however there kadded the smaller motor-ships down to 300 gross tons, which are engaged In Lake and coasting traffic, the American figure is increased to 25 per cent Th* Scandinavian nations occupy a plat* second only to Great Britain, and are represented by 36 per cent., while the Hear* for Japan is 3.5 per cent. An outstanding feature of the Scandinavian-owned motorships is the large number of cargo vessels which are employed on long term charters. Another analysis is that made of the use of the motor-ship on the basis of route and different vessel types. Onrthird of the world’s motor vessels are oil-tankers, while nearly one-fifth arv ships engaged in comparatively short rang and costal services. About the same proportion is made up of vessels tradiw to the East. Ships in the River Platt service and in the transatlantic and transPacific trades form about 12 per cent.
