NEW BRAZILIAN SHIPS.—The Brazilian shipping company, the Companhia Nacional de Navegacao Costeira, has during the past year enlarged its fleet by three motor-ships of some importance, states the “Wellington Post.” These vessels, named respectively the Itape. the Itaquice, and the ltange, have been built on the Clyde by Messrs. William Beardmore and Co., Ltd., Dalmuir, and are noteworthy as being the first vessels to be fitted with British-built supercharged Diesel engines. Of these the Itape has been completed and has run successful trials. The three vessels are sister ships, their dimensions being: Length, 370 ft; breadth, 52ft; depth, 26ft: draught, 20ft. They are each of about 5,000 tons gross and are intended both for passenger and cargo traffic on the Brazilian coast. The outstanding feature in the design of the three ships is the provision made for supercharging the internal-combustion engines by which they are propelled. The main propelling machinery consists of two sets of six-cylinder four-stroke cycle single-acting supercharged BeardmoreTosi Diesel engines. At the trials of the Itape the contract speed of 14.5 knots was easily attained, and the vessel was found capable of an average speed oY 14.8 knots.
