DAVIS CUP SURPRISE
NO U.S. TEAM FOR EUROPE HIT AGAINST TILDEN By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. NEW YORK, Sunday. Much surprise has been caused by an announcement made by the Davis Cup committee that it will not adopt the suggestion of the association that two Davis Cup teams should be nominated, one to play on American soil, and the other to get at least six weeks’ practice under European conditions, so as not to risk America’s chances through being unaccustomed to the climate. Instead it has unanimously adopted the resolution that “in view of the strength of the nations challenging in the American zone, it has been resolved that the association will not divide its strength by sending a team to Europe in advance of the American zone play, but will select our strongest team to play in the American zone in an effort to qualify for the inter-zone final.” This is considered as a direct blow against Tilden.—A. and N.Z.
