BLUEBOTTLE ARMIES
MANY BATHERS STUNG The Manly beach, near Sydney, was invaded recently by bluebottles, which were responsible for about 400 casualties, the majority of these being so serious as to necessitate ambulance treatment. One man. a visitor from Cootamundra, was profusely stung about the arms and chest, and he collapsed on the beach. He was recommended for hospital treatment. Men, women and children were often formed up in a queue outside the ambulance station at the surf sheds for the application of the blue-bag. Bluebottles were also in evidence at Bondi and Coogee, but surfers were not greatly inconvenienced by them. Vic. Bulteau, who was in charge of ti© Bondi squad of lifesavers, had a busy afternoon in bringing in about 20 surfers, who were caught in a channel between the sandbanks. The furthest swim the lifesavers had to undertake was 100yds. Most of the patients were brought in from a distance of about 50yds. None of them showed any distress.
